The Brian Jacket Letdown's second single, the wonderfully titled Eat Your Friends, is exactly what any sane music fan wants on a miserable, wet evening after a really crap day at work - a completely bonkers bid of madpop from a group of people who clearly belong in a padded cell, served up on one of those CDs that has been made to look like a midget faux vinyl single.
Lauren Laverne has picked the multinational collective (they boast members from England, Brazil, France and Poland) as one of her tips of 2007, and well chosen they are too. Spiky, poppy and leftfield enough to sound somewhere between a psychedelic acid trip and a children's novelty single recorded on a karaoke machine bought from Argos, they have a strange knack of convincing you they're covering Beatles classics in a casiotone stylee when actually they aren't, and it's all their own work. That alone is a slice of genius.
Would the novelty wear off over an entire album? Maybe, but they've intrigued me more than enough to want to find out. Best single this week, without a doubt.
