Bricolage comes from the French verb bricoler, meaning to tinker or to fiddle, and has a meaning roughly equivalent to the English term DIY. That's your first pointless bit of trivia for today. Your second is this record.
For all the professed influences from people like Roxy Music, The Kinks and The Smiths, this latest release from the four Glaswegians begins by sounding as though it's going to morph into a thinly veiled rip-off of Lovecats by The Cure. It doesn't of course. It ends up sounding more like their seminal hit Friday I'm In Love.
It's not that this is poorly performed or badly put together, it's just that after about 60 seconds you find yourself wondering if you left the gas on, or whether or not you posted the cheque for your credit card bill, or how long a piece of string is. There's something totally ephemeral about it.
They're apparently a regular fixture on the live circuit, but then so are a plethora of ABBA tribute bands. Some acts are destined to be great live but under-perform in the single and album charts. Unless we see something with a bit more oomph, that's unfortunately what the future may hold for this lot.
