Support slots with the likes of Travis and Paul Weller are elevating Brinkman to a higher profile, just in time for them to make a bid to be summer soundtrackers. Change It appeared as a B-side on April’s I Wish, and now gets its own single release.
It throws open the windows for a piece of upward thinking pop music. From the initial punch of its guitar delivery to singer Paul Cook's lightly husky delivery this pushes most of the right buttons. A lightly sardonic lyric helps as well. "Take drink, take drugs, it's new, you gotta make it into something else" goes the opening couplet, though the brief harmonizing in the chorus draws a few parallels with the layered vocals of Supertramp or ELO, a tactic too much in vogue among pop acts at the moment.
Let's not be too hard on them though, as Brinkman are clearly heading in the right direction, and there's no need for them to change it too much.
