It's really no surprise to learn that when they're not making magnificent music of their own, Nish Thirkell and Amber Jane aka The Broken Hearts are well known faces on the London Burlesque scene, and DJ a mix of 1920s oddities, swing, ‘60s girl group pop and classic rock ‘n' roll at nightspots across the capital.
As it rattles into life, the impeccably dressed duo's debut single (a collaboration with Whitey), is clearly infused with the spirit of these time-honoured influences; Black Cat - the first of this double A-side - making for a sultry opener complete with twanging double bass and eerie piano tinkles before the stripped down Blanco kicks in. It is equally impressive but shows an entirely different dimension to the band's sound, boasting whistles straight from a Western, bittersweet vocals, scratchy ramshackle riffs and a melody which just won't leave your head.
Infectious, sexy as hell and imbued with a compelling air of menace, this offering sounds like nothing else around. Prepare to fall head over heels...
