Ah, the house parties of mid-teenage years, how cool and important we thought we all were, before the arrival of rent, bills, and jobs. At least we still had musical taste, swinging each other around various living rooms (too young for the pubs of course) listening to the punk-ska stylings of Less Than Jake and Capdown. Now, six years later, new single Keeping Up Appearances lands in my lap, forcing me to rediscover my ska stomping roots.

Taking a more ferocious and spiky punk angle, Capdown are back in style with a healthy dose of anger mixed in with their trademark bounciness. This new track pile drives along, gathering more momentum as it goes, fuelled by Keith's unrelenting guitar work. As their set at this year's Reading festival proved, no one has forgotten about them in their absence, and they remain as fresh and interesting as when they unleashed Civil Disobedients in 2000.

Having always been the supporting act for the bigger bands, maybe it is now time for Capdown themselves to shine. The signs are good but we will have to wait for new album Wind Up Toys, out early next year, to be sure. With a devoted underground fan base, they've never been unloved, but with this new single it sounds like they are on the cusp of British-based ska domination.
