Since the release of their single Frontline late last year, Captain have been turning heads across the UK and far beyond with their lush electro-pop, playing everywhere from SXSW to London's Carling Live 24, supporting The Kaiser Chiefs, The Ordinary Boys, The Magic Numbers, Delays and many others who were in their position a year ago and if there's any justice in the charts and are currently where they'll be in 12 months time.
With lyrical whimsy ("A spirit for a smile and a doubt for a dream") and dance-friendly electronics, Broke sounds like a cross between the Human League and Propaganda. Helped along by Trevor Horn's unmistakable production and the twin vocal talents of Rik Flynn and 'Clare' (only the band's frontman seems entitled to a surname), they could easily have fallen out of any respectable mid-80s top 10.
The single is due to be released in as many formats as you can name, including a gatefold 7-inch an extravagance the band blame, like the sparkly blue vinyl of their previous effort, on having a girl in the band: a more likely explanation is their general enthusiasm and exuberance for the best sort of uplifting pop.
