I was really hoping Swansea's The Caves were going to be Nick Cave's bastard Welsh offspring but no matter. If Busted had elder sisters with better record collections they may could have come up with something akin to The Caves crashing strut. Possibly too clever for kidz, The Caves just might be Cymru's long overdue answer to The Undertones.
Despite the song-titles, The Caves look to be all about 'real' instruments, without even a whirr of electronics. Steve Jones style-thrash and Motown-beat handclaps fair pound lines like "I am the Universe / But I just can't get out of bed" right into the grey matter. On top of that, they sound like a right larf.
Not only are The Caves made up of young dudes called Dai and Darren, but Simon's Robotic Hand is easily the funniest song-title of the year. Well, after Real To Me by the pie-faced one from Westlife, that is.
