Cazals present a modern update of the early Spandau Ballet tale of teenage prostitution by adding gravely vocals over the 80s dance synths, giving the song a grittier edge that brings it admirably into the 21st century.
To Cut A Long Story Short was Spandau's first single, a darker, edgier sound than they're often remembered for, and one to which Franz Ferdinand owe more of a debt than it's cool to admit.
Cazals take what was always a great song and mould it in enough ways to grab everyone's attention, from the relatively faithful main offering, to the slower Vicarious Bliss mellotron mix, the Krautrock-inspired autoKratz 80's Heartthrob mix and the up-to-the-minute, clubtastic Streetlife DJ's Cut N'Run dub.
If all this helps to rehabilitate Journeys To Glory, the first Spandau Ballet album that's more of a lost classic than most people have noticed, it's a rehabilitation that's long overdue and will be well deserved. If not, at least Cazals tried.
