The original version opened Wonderland, their excellent 2001 album, and was due to be released as a single, before some kind of mystery complication (things are never simple for The Charlatans) put those plans on the skids. Including the original mix on the compilation would have made perfect sense, as it was the jewel in Wonderland's crown, but some record company goon obviously thought it needed 'modernising', hence this pointless remix.

Youth (co-producer of The Killers' Sam's Town and all-round man of the moment) strips the track of its sultry former glory, turning it into a turgid, second-rate dance anthem. As a trailer for the best-of, it's a terrible choice, and does no justice to the band's tremendous legacy of brilliant singles over their seventeen year career. If the retrospective really does spell the end for Tim Burgess and the lads, then this will be a horrible, damp squib of a curtain-closer. Here's hoping that's not the case.
