The Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, Dutch, Australian singer, writer, producer Che'Nelle has quite a background already. Her debut single, a soca-fuelled, dancehall track featuring reggae artist Cham, will no doubt add more layers to her unique identity as a rising hip-hop artist.
The complex West-Indian styling of the track has given it an impressive, boisterous bass section as a foundation. The rest is built with simple lyrics and a crucially catchy chorus. Taken from the forthcoming album Things Happen For A Reason is a truly promising start to a popular career.
She playfully tells a story of getting away with stolen moments of infidelity "'round the back door" at a club. Her voice is crystal clear, almost childlike, skipping rhythmically over the beat, but she sounds curiously unemotional and cold - imagine if Kylie decided to take a turn at Ragga. It's unapologetic for her behaviour and it's great to see that level of risqué attitude in her first single.
You can't cast any accusations of ground breaking creativity here but we have a great commercial entry which is quite cute, pretty infectious and the patter of those drums is well placed for some serious ass shaking.
