Before you had even realised they had gone away, Brooklyn's brightest disco poppers are back to reassert the very potent muscle exposed last year with their self-titled debut. The lead single to imminent release Some Loud Thunder is a delicious hint of CYHSY's increasing energy and experimentation, a true blast of warmth for these deep winter months.
One most notable sign of progression comes in the track's continual electronic fumblings. No doubt influenced by Flaming Lips producer Dave Friedmann, Satan Said Dance displays an array of space-age noises that fizz, pop and screech along throughout. This added dimension in fact improves the instrumental sound of the band no end, reducing the need for Alec Ounsworth's vocal to pervade every bar. When used sparsely, the effect of Ounsworth's nasal whine is multiplied hugely, and keeps the feel of this pulsing dance-rock number that touch more exciting.
The band have also nailed one of their best hooks to date, as Ounsworth chants "Satan said dance" with melancholic verve. This crescendos into a glorious guitar-driven outro that is sure to get limbs flailing, a welcome response to any disco number. Ultimately, it seems one of 2006's most talked-about bands have perfected their craft and will surely reap the benefits.
