The Liverpudlian quartet have come back into favour of late with their Winchester Cathedral album, and this second single is a woozy, magnificently disturbing song that shows why they're so highly regarded.
Circle Of Fifths is propelled along by an insistent piano riff and some thumping drums which give the song a feeling of dread. Ade Blackburn's nasal vocals may not be to everyone's tastes, but the overall effect is fantastically atmospherical. Listening to Circle Of Fifths, it's hard to believe that Levi's once soundtracked one of their 501 adverts with the sound of Clinic.
The other two tracks on the CD are completely different but equally good - The Scythe is a spiky little instrumental while Stardust's harmonica riff is almost dreamy. Another excellent single from one of the more under-rated bands of the moment.
