If You Could Read Your Mind is a great example of the sound achieved by Clinic on their Visitations album - densely textured rock music but strangely disembodied vocals coming from afar. In fact there's a weird feeling that as the listener you're stood up the other end of an enormous aircraft hanger, while the band chuck as much noise as possible in your direction.
But then that makes it sound as if Clinic don't care about the melodic content or sensibility of their songs, and it's clear from this that they do. It proves tricky to hear exactly what Ade sings at times though, his slightly nasal tone only just projecting over the odd 'whoops' given in the backing of the second verse.
An impressive wall of sound then - but their sound is definitely best appreciated on a long player.
