In the fantasy electronic music Brits, Coldcut
would surely have earnt themselves a lifetime
achievement award by now. Yet on the evidence of this
track they would also be up for best single of 2006,
as one of the stand-out cuts from return to form album
Sound Mirrors gets a release.
It pits them with label mate Roots Manuva,
and is quite unlike anything else you'll have heard
before, a highly distinctive blend of Bollywood-like
vocals and a dancehall rhythm. A virtuoso performance
from Roots finds him making all kinds of noises from a
softer rap to a strangled cry as he goes along with
the main melody later on. The combination of an
extremely danceable rhythm, a euphoric chorus and a
strong rap is irresistible, and it's small wonder this
track has already found use on a TV advert.
All power to the three performers' elbows then -
this is one of the most distinctive tracks in a long
time, even from a label as famously eclectic as
Ninja.
