While always capable of being an aural chameleon, Conor Oberst has rarely sounded so much like a modern day Dylan as he does on new single Souled Out.
If you can get past the terrible pun, the song holds up against anything he's done in the past, minimal and layered at the same time, deeper than it appears to be while not really saying anything at all - if the lyrics make any sense to you, do please let me know.
With guitar solos there for no other reason than to show that he can, there's a classic quality that lends Souled Out a certain gravitas, underpinned with a slight whiff of anger not always present in his work.
In all, it's textbook Oberst while being new and fresh at the same time. A hugely talented performer no matter what guise he goes under, this is a welcome addition to an oeuvre that grows steadily more impressive all the time.
