With their release, The Conway Story will doubtless have been aiming to stamp their mark indelibly into the consciousness of their listeners. They fail to do so, mainly because Photogenic proves something of a jumble of styles that struggles to find coherence. Their description as a "dark pop group" says one thing, while a nauseating opening synth riff - sounding like it's been pinched from a grade one keyboard book - says another. Add in a Limp Bizkit-style nu-metal riff two bars in, and things get very complicated.
Despite having three guitarists, the musicianship feels very weak and limited throughout most of this track. Thankfully, we are given touch of pace and conviction thanks to the splendidly named drummer Lenin Algeria. Of course, limited guitar work is fine, but, unfortunately, front man Nik Owens does not have the sort of voice that can fill the voids - his throaty, relatively tuneless mumblings do not escape the backing track to stand out and grab the attention, which leaves, well, nothing there.
The high point of the track is definitely the sudden punch that comes with the chorus, Owens letting his voice loose crying; "Camera camera, I swear it isn't all my fault," seemingly lamenting the distorted truth that can sometimes be conveyed through a lens. This could, of course, be the wrong interpretation of the line, and if so it would epitomise the band's lack of direction with this release. Eclectic is fine, but this just isn't interesting enough to pull it off.
