The Council decided to form a rock'n'roll band while on a school trip to visit war graves in France and you can't help but wonder if this might be somehow related to the fact that they sound like they're stuck in the past. To be precise, somewhere around 1971, when guitar solos only ruled supreme if they dragged a song out to twice its natural length and then decided to go on for a few more minutes just for good measure.
The fact that this 'EP' is only three tracks (but nearly 20 minutes) long is a clue to what you can expect, not to mention that the first track, Rainy Days, is suffixed with ‘revisited' and the second, Guinevere, is more than seven (seven!) minutes long. Which is only slightly longer than the last, If it Makes a Change, at six and a half.
On the plus side, for a band barely into their '20s, The Council present a very accomplished mix of bluesy-prog noodling with a nod to gospel in both its musical and lyrical content. They can certainly play those old axe solos with the best of them and Derin Adebiyi can certainly sing. In fact, if you don't think the world has enough Led Zeppelin and Cream albums already, you'll find very little here to complain about at all. Plus, even though this is only a three-track EP, they have proper sleeve notes with lyrics and everything, and they deserve some kudos for that alone.
