Counting Crows - If I Could Give All My Love (Geffen)

...or Richard Manuel is dead, to give it its full title. The latest offering from the Hard Candy album finds the Crows in more familiar territory. With an intro that sounds more 1973 than 2003, If I Could Give..is a laid- back country rock song with all the usual Crows hallmarks.
Adam Duritz's voice is in its usual emotive form, and the music manages to mask the darker tones of his lyrics. Not as attention grabbing as its predecessors, it is however armed with a melodic chorus that gradually works its way into the brain.
The live appearance on Radio 2 will probably help raise its profile, but it is unlikely to garner the same widespread attention as Big Yellow Taxi.
