The trouble with proclaiming you're the future of rock'n'roll is that you'd better make damn sure you deliver on that. The Courteeners' frontman Liam Fray has been telling all and sundry how great his band are recently, so much so that the Mancunians have been on most people's 'one to watch' list at the start of the year.
The problem is that it sounds just like every other run of the mill indie band out there. The Libertines split up years ago, yet we still have bands desperate to fill that void. What Took You So Long is full of Johnny Marr-style guitar licks, sneering vocals and some admittedly witty lyrics having a pop at the MySpace addicted hordes ("You spend too much time sat in your bedroom, on your PC...").
They've already attracted a fiercely loyal army of fans who have made their live shows somewhat incendiary, but on record it's difficult to see what all the fuss is about. "I'm like Morrissey with some strings," sings Fray at one point. You're not, mate. Not even close.
