After 20 or so years, you know what you're getting with The Cure. Just as it's reassuring to know that Robert Smith still has that birds nest hairdo, it's comforting to hear another epic, uplifting song of the type they do so well.

Taking Off is one of the highlights of the band's self-titled recent album. Smith is in fine voice and this is reminiscent of some of The Cure's best material such as Just Like Heaven. With Smith in a seemingly happy mood ("Tomorrow I can start again"), this is closer to the Friday I'm In Love aspect of the band than the doomy Pornography/Disintegration side.

While they may not be as vital as they once were, Taking Off is another sign that The Cure remain in rude health.
