If you're sick of the forced jollity and bonhomie of Christmas time, then step Damian Rice's way. 9 Crimes is the opening track from his recently released album 9, and it follows the template of the successful O almost down to the letter.

9 Crimes is a stark piano ballad, which begins with the beautiful vocals of Lisa Hannigan. A cello sways gently in the background before Rice appears, his voice full of self-loathing, bitterness and regret. The lyrics appear to be about a man confessing to infidelity and both Rice and Hannigan's voices mesh as perfectly as ever.

It's a beautiful song, if a bit of a weird choice for a single. Given the festive time of year, it's likely to sink without trace, but it's worth checking out if you're sick of Slade, Macca and Sir Cliff.
