He'd had a bad day back in the summer, and quite frankly after a few months of Daniel Powter being inescapable, so had we. Mr Powter is another in the long line of earnest male singer/songwriters that have sprung up since the success of James Blunt, and Free Loop looks set to continue the behatted one's ubiquity.
There's nothing essential wrong with Free Loop, but it's just so damn predictable. Professionally played and sung, and given a radio-friendly sheen by Crowded House producer Mitchell Froom, it's a song that will stay in your head no matter how much you don't want to it. Yet it's got 'formula' written all over it - it's been designed to sell to everyone who buys one or two records a year, and this will no doubt sit nicely next to the Maroon 5 album.
From the Coldplay-ish piano chords through to the rather bizarre lyrics ("I've been fabulous through to fight my town a name" anyone?), this will be blasting out from every clothing emporium in the land for the next few weeks. Looks like another few bad days then...
