You could be forgiven for thinking Daniel Wylie
spent a long time in Manchester early in the 1990s. His cover of the Wishbone Ash song Time Was
takes a long look in the rear view mirror, picking out
the groovy sound of the Hacienda. It's something of an
eye-opener after the sunshine pop of last year's
Ramshackle Beauty, Wylie's tuneful return from the
wilderness.
Normal service is closer to being resumed for the
two acoustically based B-sides, although even here the
Glaswegian seems keen to experiment with new sounds - a
throbbing organ accompanying Walking In My Shoes - and
an angrier approach to lyrics, laying into his
subject with the put down; "You're a sad excuse for a
man."
It seems the former Rough Ryder is feeling a little
restless on this EP, which makes sense given that he
has already moved on to the LP after next and changed
his style significantly. He's a man whose music is
well worth keeping an eye (and ear) open for.
