How seriously can you take American rock made by someone who came third on American Idol a couple of years ago? Gravelly but soulful rock vocalist Chris Daughtry was tipped to win the show thanks to his rather inspired hard rock reworkings of classics like I Walk The Line, but after a surprise eviction clearly went off to focus on his 'roots'. Was forming a band and putting together an album of tight anthemic rock a good idea, when he could have banged out a selection of interesting covers instead?
On first listen it's tempting to say no, he could have done something much more interesting. But Home, second single from the band's eponymous debut album, is one of those tunes that swells up and up and really grabs you - just as well since the lyrics ("I'm going home, to the place where I belong") are on the trite side.
Daughtry sings it like he means it though, in best stadium rock style, and after just three listens I'm more than capable of bellowing it in the shower too... all too gripping, not too dangerous, perfect for the American market (where it's already been number one) but perhaps a little Yankie-bland for us Brits.
