Admittedly, the world needs another intense, earnest male singer/songwriter like it needs a hole in the head. Even before James Blunt came along and made everyone rather ashamed of being a 'songwriter', we'd had enough Grays and Rices to last a lifetime. Yet David Ford is a little bit different.
The former singer of Easyworld seemed to settle pretty effortlessly into the solo world, going by his debut I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused, and his record company have taken a slow-burn approach to his forthcoming album. Songs For The Road has been available on download for a few months, prior to its 'official' release this month, which has helped it to build up a strong word-of-mouth following.
Decimate skips along beautifully, with a Motown-style backing beat, a typically yearning vocal performance from Ford and an eye-catching way with a lyric ("lets take a walk out on the broken glass"). Whether it's commercial enough for Ford to muscle his way into his rather overcrowded milieu is another thing, but this is a decent reminder of the man's quality.
