When Embrace's World At Your Feet was chosen as the official England World Cup song, there was a general reaction of dismay and disappointment. So much so that there's a whole load of 'unofficial' World Cup songs coming out now, including Sham 69, a gang of brickies who call themselves Young Stanley and the inevitable horror of the Crazy Frog. None of them could come even close to matching the sheer awfulness of Dead Poets Society however.

The brainchild of former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read (yes, the man who banned Frankie Goes To Hollywood and was last seen sat around in a jungle with a load of other D-list celebrities), Dead Poets Society specialise in putting the words of famous poems to music. For England My England, Read's roped in young singer Elliot Frisby to recite the words of WE Henley's poem in order to inspire Sven, Becks, Stevie G and the rest.

One can only hope and pray that they never get to hear England My England, as it's so over the top it's likely to reduce them to helpless laughter. Frisby has a strong voice admittedly, but he also has a tendency to elucidate each and every word in a very over the top manner. Read's musical backing is a hackneyed, dated, pseudo-orchestral mess, and the whole thing is almost enough to make you scurrying off looking for the Embrace single. Well, almost.
