Deaf Stereo - EP1 (Adventures In The Beetroot Field/Vladivar)
UK release date: 14 August 2006
After two years together mainly on the London gig circuit, including support slots for Infadels and Mylo in 2005, Camden quintet Deaf Stereo unleash their debut EP on us and you know what? It's pretty damn good.
The main track on this two-song collection, House On Fire, conjures up an alluring dance/post-punk mix with an opening minute where parts are gradually added that complete a picture you thought would look completely different when you started. What appears to be a dance number, as thudding beats spark it into life, is rapidly changed by the addition of a growling bass line and then fidgety guitars and pounding drums.
With swirling electronica throughout, it all combines to make a fine blend and one that doesn't simply go down the route of copying Bloc Party and the rest of the post-punk revivalists. With an anthemic chorus as well the song, complemented by similarly impressive second track Blackout Falls, announces Deaf Stereo's arrival as a band to look out for.
