Take two boys and a girl. Put one in charge of beats. Let another strum his guitar from time to time. Spread vocal duties liberally between them. Now, give them a mixing desk and lock the door - we'll have no bland producers trying to groom the next S Club in here...
Say hello to Jules, Katie and Simon - otherwise known as Dear Eskiimo - who are, it seems, hell-bent on returning a degree of credibility to the floundering world of pop music. With Be Patient they are turning heads by drawing upon a vast range of influences to fill the void left by the likes of Space and Alisha's Attic - and it's damn refreshing to hear self-written, self-produced pop for once. Take note, Cowell.
I am by no means a pop fan, but Dear Eskiimo's debut EP is every bit as good as we're led to believe: the cacophony ranging from standard guitar pickery and striking harmonies to incisive lyrics and - gasp - interesting time signatures. Does it really take the honest efforts of this trio to expose the abundance of crap clogging pop's pipes? Perhaps.
