The first in a three-disc release of seven inch vinyl singles, Valerie Plame takes The Decemberists' paean to a US Ambassador's CIA agent wife and backs it with O New England for the collectibles/vinyl junkie market.

Valerie Plame has the wonderful plus point of rhyming 'chariot' with 'Green Zone Marriott' with the kind of chutzpah only Colin Melloy could hope to get away with, but you still can't help but ask why? And why on 12" as well, if not just for the sake of wringing even more dosh out of people you'd hope would have more sense? Decemberists fans aren't supposed to be that stupid.

Next time up (4 November) we're promised a cover of the Velvet Underground's I'm Sticking With You as a b-side. This sounds more slightly more worthwhile, but even then there are such things as MP3s these days. They're much easier and neater, you know.
