English guitar bands may have been rather moribound recently, but by the sounds of this debut single, Southampton-based Delays could be the band to resurrect the twitching corpse.
Reminiscent of early Suede, Nearer Than Heaven is a sublime piece of soaring pop, with a chorus to die for. Greg Gilbert's eerie vocals reach the parts that other voices just can't reach, being a mixture of Morrissey, Liz Fraser and Brett Anderson.
The other two tracks on the single are equally as good, marking out Delays as a real name to watch out for. This lot are going to be huge, so catch them while you can.
