The third single from their outstanding debut album Waterloo to Anywhere, Wondering is another punchy, catchy guitar-driven rock-pop song from Dirty Pretty Things.
OK, it's not as original or as memorable as the best of The Libertines, but it's a hell of a lot better than what Babyshambles can muster. In just under three minutes of adrenalin-filled melodic moodiness, from kick-start to sudden finish, like all the better slices of rock'n'roll, it leaves you wanting more.
Barat's voice may be no more than serviceable and the lyrics making little impression - the boy Doherty does have a way with words, and a way of expressing them - but Barat’s slashing guitar lines and the band's edginess propel the song forward on an irresistible tidal wave of energy.
DPT may be more memorable for their power than their poetry but their songs still evoke a world of seedy glamour in which pleasures are fleeting but intense: "But still there is something there to play upon / A flash of instant thereabouts you'll miss it and it's gone." A bit like the experience of listening to this track, you could say.
