"Some people seem to believe that when you attain a certain level of celebrity it gives you the right to act like an arse." Thus says Neil Hannon, aka The Divine Comedy, about his new single's subject matter.
Diva Lady, the lead single from Victory For The Comic Muse, places Hannon back in the role he suits best - witty observer of the absurd. His attention here is focused, light-heartedly, on a construct familiar to tabloid newspaper readers, the ridiculous diva (epitomised best by Mariah Carey and ilk). "She's got 30 people in her entourage/Just in case her ego needs a quick massage."
Hannon nabbed production and arranging duties for himself this time, and he's gone for big band orchestral sounds. Unlike the overthought and stifling Regeneration album, this bodes well for fans of Casanova-era Comedy. Could it be Hannon's finally happy in his musical skin?
