After building a reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting DJ’s on the planet, Yoda has decided to turn his hand to making his own records instead. A potentially risky move, especially as he appears to be aiming resolutely for the mainstream, rather than the safety of underground credibility.
This opening gambit from his forthcoming debut The Amazing Adventures Of DJ Yoda is insanely catchy - a big bundle of pop hooks that barges its way into your consciousness and then won't bloody leave. Like a cross between The Go! Team and Black Eyed Peas, and as colourful and vibrant as the cartoons on the sleeve, it's great fun, but treads dangerously close to being annoying. In the end, the sheer joyous silliness of it wins through.
B-Side and album track Tiptoe, however, is a nauseatingly twee and unfunny sampling of an ancient dance exercise video, completely overstepping the mark in a way the A-Side skillfully avoided. So far, the risk has just about come off for him. The album should be interesting.
