The Donnas - I Don't Want To Know (If You Don't Want Me) (Atlantic)
UK release date: 7 March 2005
This is close to three and half minutes of pure punk pop perfection.
Effervescent and angry. It starts with a suitable abrasive buzzing guitar riff, adding hand claps and
vocals laced with honeyed hurt. Knife sharp and sassy. The sound of Ash if they were all female and raised on a musical diet that was more
Aerosmith than AC/DC, with Californian sunshine replacing Northern
Irish drizzle.
Lyrically it's a bleak tale of a spurned lover's desperation turned to spite.
Imagine if Corrie's Katy Harris had channelled her hurt through a mesh of
guitars instead of turning to regicide. Like a razorblade in your bubble gum. "I've already met your Mum and Dad, They say I am the best one you never had."
Avril Lavigne after Sk8er Boi has opted for the preppy princess after
all; The Distillers with more pop suss; A strawberry switchblade, street
smart and cracking up.
