Scottish vocalist Dot Allison takes a slight change of direction with her new EP, Beneath The Ivy. The singer/songwriter who is known for her work with former band One Dove and her collaborations with Death in Vegas drops the electro in favour of a more stripped down, raw acoustic sound.
Lead track Quicksand has a twinge of alt-country about it and allows Allison's voice to shine in its purity. Blade Of Words has a darker feel and is the most reminiscent of Allison’s previous material, while Paper Rose fails to make any real impact, and sounds very much like a typical B-side.
The tracks are likely to appeal to Allison's fans but, although they make for pleasant listening, are unlikely to break any new ground. They do, however, offer a decent taster as to what her forthcoming album may sound like. It is to be produced by Kramer, who has worked with the likes of Galaxie 500 and Low.
