Singer Anthony Tombling Jnr (who along with his trusty drummer partner, David Francolini, together make up Dragons) has clearly been channeling Ian Curtis. Their whole album, Here Are The Roses, from which this is the first single, is shot through with Joy Divison references.
For Condition, a song which particularly emphasises their '80s electronica influences, the duo have borrowed a little of the feedback-edged guitar and batteringly repetitive drumming of The Velvet Underground to dirty up what would otherwise be a very musically cold piece, the repetitive lyrics adding to the effect of dehumanisation and distancing.
The B-side, Failure, isn't going to perk anyone up either ("I walk hand in hand with my failure, failure..."), but still maintains that slightly scuzzy human touch to the guitar, juxtaposed to the rhythmic precision, while Tombling's vocal, in a higher range, communicate a kind of ragged desperation. If you like this, you will certainly like the album - and yet the tracks on the album are much more adventurous and in many cases warmer than this particularly robotic pairing they've chosen to showcase on the first single.
