Following their fun and fairly vacuous first single Rocket, single number two from the perky Glaswegians comes as they are entertaining the nation on Kasabian's sell-out tour. You could be forgiven for thinking that a band whose first two singles are called Rocket and 100mph are into their speed, but both are laid-back happy affairs with an affectionate retro feel.

An opening guitar groove that's pure AC/DC is followed by some of the lovely, squealy synth bends that coloured their first single. However, whilst Rocket went into pure P-Funk territory, 100mph feels just like Herman's Hermits' Something Tells Me I'm Into Something Good, but for the 21st Century. Like Rocket, the lyrics are a little unimaginative and it somehow still seems to lack the brazen confidence you'd expect of a 'Next Big Thing' - that said, it's a potential summer classic, so you could well be hearing 100mph blasting out of student hall windows for a few months to come.

I can't help but feel that when El Presidente do hit their stride they'll be something special. They've clearly got their band image cleverly worked out, and the video to the single, with its Rubik's Cube / slidy-block-puzzle thing going on, is actually pretty cool (and I normally despise videos). Definitely one to watch out for this summer, especially when the Elected album hits.
