Ella Guru - Park Lane Speakers (Banana)
UK release date: 25 October 2004
Ella Guru - Park Lane Speakers
I was intrigued and enticed by Ella Guru. Not only are they named after a Captain Beefheart song, but they had somehow managed to lure Zappa vocalist supremo Jimmy Carl Black to play on their debut LP The First Album. This single, from the aforementioned LP, therefore intrigued and enticed.

Park Lane Speakers starts very quietly indeed, the vocals a whisper and the listener knows quickly that this band does not conform. Indeed, at gigs they are renowned for asking the audience to listen silently, which is laudable if the band are worth listening to. The vocals are muted, and pleasantly meander with the soft and sweet melodeon led backing. The lyrics are not often audible however, and I want them to be - I want to hear the story. However, the layer aspect of the vocals does draw the listener in, and you certainly need to listen carefully to catch the understated melody.

Bands strive for understated beauty however, and although in this single there can be heard pleasant, nice, subtle and pretty, beauty is somehow lacking. Ella Guru do achieve a difference and it's an interesting difference that beckons further listening, but on the basis of this single, I might want to just chat a bit.
