Taken from his first new album for seven years, When I was Cruel, 45 has been described by Elvis Costello as "autobiographical arithmetic". No, I don't know what that means either. Was he born in '45? Could well have been... in any case dates are intermingled with record speeds, in a typically quirky song which isn't bad, though I could do without the tremolo in the voice.
The video that accompanies the song only deepens the mystery.
My Mood Swings on the other hand is a lovely two minutes with a terrific bluesy feel and Peroxide Side is pure Bob Dylan delivery but with a hot rhythm backing.
