"When I'm gone just carry on, don't mourn, rejoice, every time you hear the sound of my voice". These lyrics are the source of much speculation as to whether they are a resignation note or just Eminem throwing out a trademark curve-ball to the music world.

Regardless of the meaning When I'm Gone is Eminem's most cathartic song, and yes, it is a song. Of course Mr Mathers raps about his sleep problems and how his career has impaired his ability to be the father he wanted to be but the melody and the rhythm of the track leave it firmly outside the hip-hop domain.

When I'm Gone goes some way to repaying the fans who Em disappointed over the summer after pulling out of the Anger Management Tour, in part explaining his decision, and in another part demonstrating why he is regarded by some as a true lyrical genius. The concept and the lyrics themselves aren't particularly brilliant, but the whole package is.
