Eminem's masterclass in how to build tension through a track, Lose Yourself, from the 8 Mile soundtrack, works a treat - however you look at it.

Lyrically, it's challenging, gritty - and catchy. And of course Slim Shady's flawless vocals aid the track immeasurably. Yet it's the spiky guitar and whimsical piano counter-melody that make this one of the catchiest singles of the year.

Whether he's talking about himself or the film's character (the line is very thin between the two) the heartfelt themes and words of this track haunt. The fantastic line: "Success is my only motherfuckin' option, failure's not" finds as its counterpoint the line: "Mom I love you." There's a controversial star, then.
