Engerica sound like what would happen if System Of A Down came from Essex rather than Armenia. At least that goes some way to explaining the warped head-fuck metal that is The Smell and why they seem to be a bit angst-ridden: coming from the place most famous for Chantelle and shopping centres as big as American states could rile even the most laid back metal fan.
Combining the cryptic lyrics and spoken cum harmonious vocals of SOAD with the power punk of new goth megastars HIM or My Chemical Romance, The Smell is both immediate and utterly bewildering. Lyrics veer from the profound ("You and I could die in one minute") to the ridiculous ("Liar cheater bogey eater / Look out everyone / Here comes Peter") in a kind of immature mash up of a band who have as much of a sense of fun as musical prowess.
Tight, spiralling, discordant riffs and a shouty climax that will meet the standards of most metal fans should keep The Smell high on most modern metal fans playlists for a while, and Engerica's general oddness could well keep them there.
