Imagine a Swedish indie band doing a Christmas song. Someone like The Cardigans or The Wannadies spreading lovely jangly guitars and heartbreaking melodies over a song that's made to be a soundtrack to throw snowballs to. Right?
Not if the Swedish indie band in question are Envelopes. The download-only (and free, to boot) Pink Christmas is one of the most bizarre festive songs ever made. It has a rather queasy melody, is deeply experimental, and doesn't seem to have much of a tune. The speeded up vocals near the start sound more sinister than cuddly, and the band sound like they're having a competition to cram in as many obtuse sounds as possible.
Yet after a while it all clicks into place. It's not the most easy to listen Christmas song, nor will it be soundtracking your turkey dinner (unless you live in a particularly understanding household). Yet there's something about it that keeps drawing you back. It's a lot more interesting than Sir Cliff, that's for sure...
