With their last effort The Open Door, Arkansas rockers Evanescence unfortunately suffered from the dreaded sophomore slump. A lax effort comprising self-effacing ballads and mundane, bloated rockers, it was by an large a firm backward step for a band who'd previously shone on their 2003 debut, Fallen.
Taken from The Open Door, new single Lithium - which, by the way, bears no resemblance to the Nirvana track of the same name - is one of those aforementioned bloated rockers. It's got the same tinkling piano intro that you'd have found on 90% of their debut outing, but somewhere over the space of the past two years the band have seemingly lost their spark, that certain something that made them slightly better than most others.
The rather generic rock-out that ensues could be done by anyone and everyone, and with Amy Lee's vocals lacking the 'wow' factor of 2003, it's a shame to say that Lithium only serves to confirm what previous single Call Me When You're Sober hinted at, that Evanescence are a mere shadow of the band they used to be.
