The Top Five placing of Evanescence's Fallen album and subsequent shooting to Number One of the Bring Me To Life single is surely one of the least foretellable success stories in recent times. Whether you liked the song or not, it provided welcome hope that bands can make it through pure word of mouth and without the aid of a cynical marketing machine.
This follow-up, which is the opening track on Fallen, should be more than strong enough to ensure Evanescence aren't consigned to the bin of one-hit wonders. Similar elements to Bring Me To Life are present: Amy Lee's temptress vocals, pseudo-electronic beats à la Linkin Park, understated but menacing metallic riffs in the background, and a ripping, radio-friendly rock chorus.
Evanescence have poured bits of metal and goth into the cauldron, and by using a smattering of pop, produced a mix that makes those two musical genres more palatable to the general public. They deserve our congratulations.
