The first single from Exit Music, a cover of the anthemic Radiohead classic, Just, proved that tampering with Radiohead's music is risky business, and if it is to be done, it needs to be done very well indeed. Frankly, the first single fell well short of this necessary mark.
Follow up single, High And Dry, however, happily enjoys different fortune. The cover takes the song (another Radiohead classic) and transforms it into a silky smooth, feel good, dare I say it, summer anthem. The exquisite vocal work of Bilal is complemented by swelling brass, swirling organ, and luscious texture that builds as the song progresses.
The b-side is a cover of Street Spirit (Fade Out), featuring the voice of Lindsay Anderson, whose lacklustre delivery is essentially little but annoying. The song has an almost Four Tet feel to it, albeit an extremely amateur Four Tet, and reflects much of the originals haunting nature but none of its beauty. Buy it for the a-side.
