Exlovers are annoying in as much as that they are clearly very good, but Just A Silhouette just sounds like it's going through the motions: flaccid, milky, and ultimately a bit soulless.
Which is a shame, because the vocals of Peter Scott are hushed and beautiful, as is amply demonstrated by the thunder-stealing serenity of b-side, Clouds, featuring simply Scott and an acoustic guitar.
Scott's vocals have prompted Elliott Smith references, but Clouds also has shades of Silversun Pickup's Brian Aubert at his most angelic. But however hypnotic the vocals, the music media should be focussing on the music - that such eminence is being handed to Scott's vocals is perhaps evidence that Exlovers are lacking a little musically. For a band that only formed at the beginning of 2008, time is abundant for musical development.
