The Exports - A Letter From The Whiz Kid (Oak Road)
UK release date: 14 March 2005
A Letter From The Whiz Kid, the debut offering from Manchester band The Exports, is a song of two halves.
First off is a lively, punk-by-numbers style, complete with unpolished vocals and murky production. There is then a change of pace and intensity as the guitars drop out and the drums drop back, while the lyrics play an extended game of I Spy ("I'll see you under the lights... I'll see you in the lion's den... I'll see you if we get to the end..."). And although the guitars return towards the end, the bass retains prominence in the mix until the final drum roll.
With its high energy, obvious musical references, slightly ropey vocals and odd production, the overall effect is that of a reasonable demo by a group of schoolboys. In other words, unlikely to set the world alight.
