It's been three years since Brooklyn native Fobolous released his debut single I Can't Deny It, but his career has never really taken off, despite the fact that 2003's Street Dreams was one of the best hip-hop releases of last year. Still, Fab's held in high regard in hip-hop's outskirts, even supporting 50 Cent on his No Fear No Mercy tour.
Breathe is the first release from latest album Real Talk, and it's a complex track thanks to Just Blaze's production skills. The beat is a mock-epic featuring a sample from Supertramp's Crime of the Century while maintaining a dark underground feel.
What impresses most about Breathe is the fact that there's a maturity in Fabolous' rapping that has been previously non-existent. It mightn't be enough to elevate him into the upper echelons of the rap game, and it won't be enough to give large commercial success to Real Talk but it's certainly a start.
