The opening track of The Fallout Trust's debut album In Case Of The Flood mixes Cloresque beats with Coldplayesque melodies for a whole that is greater - and more agreeable - than a sum of its parts would suggest.
Bizarrely derided by some as MOR, The Fallout Trust in reality have a great deal more to offer, with emotive arrangements featuring soaring guitar and Joe Winter's helium-tinged vocals giving the band's material their trademark hooks. They have a strong sense of song structure and an ear for melody, yet aren't afraid to experiment with arrangement and production. When We Are Gone is a case in point.
What's odd is that they've not yet made more of an impact since the album's February release. In common with all too many indie acts signed to majors, there doesn't seem to be a particular momentum with them; their assault on the nation seems - rightly or wrongly - to take place as an afterthought. There's a pervasive sense of underdelivery. The fact that this single release comes at a time when the band are inexplicably supporting the worthy but hardly groundbreaking Morning Runner on tour speaks volumes. They should be headlining to a rapt and ever-growing fanbase by now. It's a funny old world.
